Original Cartridge
Predictable yield, consistent quality, and the manufacturer's warranty stays intact. The highest price per unit, but also the lowest defect rate.
Compatible Cartridge
40-60% cheaper than the original. Quality varies from batch to batch: it may work reliably from one supplier and shed toner from another. Get a trial batch before buying a year's supply.
Refilling
The cheapest option per cycle, but it requires oversight: the drum and wiper blade wear with each refill. Real savings only materialize with decent toner and replacement of worn parts.
How to Calculate Honestly
Cost per page = (cartridge price + the share of repair costs it causes) ÷ actual yield. A compatible cartridge at 40% of the price that delivers 60% of the original's yield brings no savings at all.
Recommendation
- Equipment under warranty — original only.
- High-volume document printing — a proven compatible cartridge.
- An old, out-of-warranty device — refilling with wiper blade replacement.
