Buying
The device becomes your asset. From then on, you pay for consumables, maintenance, and repairs yourself. Worthwhile if print volume is stable and the equipment will run for 5+ years.
Rental with Service
A fixed monthly payment, with consumables and engineer visits included. If it breaks, the device is replaced, not repaired for weeks.
When Renting Is More Cost-Effective
- Project work: equipment is needed only for the duration of construction, a tender, or a season.
- No in-house IT and no desire to maintain a consumables warehouse.
- You need production-class equipment whose purchase would immediately blow the budget.
- Predictable monthly write-offs matter more than capital expenditure.
When Buying Is More Cost-Effective
- Print volume is small and steady.
- You have your own specialists and an established consumables supply chain.
- The equipment will run for a long time — over 4-5 years, rental usually catches up to the purchase cost.
How to Compare
Add up over 36 months: the device price, all consumables, scheduled maintenance, and likely repairs. Compare it with the total rental payments for the same period. The difference is usually smaller than it appears at first.
